Tell Yahoo Aviate's product story through art

the brief
Yahoo Aviate is not your typical, everyday homescreen. It's an intelligent homescreen that simplifies everything you do with your phone.

Yahoo is creating an ad campaign that showcases how the Aviate for Android™ app will enhance your phone, and they want your help in selling the story of Aviate to consumers. Yahoo is inviting all artists, designers and illustrators to create artwork inspired by one of Aviate's product benefits (it can also be a combination of them):
  • Simple
  • Beautiful
  • Intelligent
  • Personalised
Yahoo Aviate is looking for inventive and imaginative ways to tell their product story. Artists may submit existing work or new work but they must use one of the provided templates.

The selected artist will receive $2,500 and six highly commended finalists will also each receive $500.

about Yahoo Aviate
Yahoo Aviate is the launcher that will take your phone to the next level. Gone are the days of a cluttered phone. Yahoo Aviate automatically organises your apps and shows you the information you need, at the moment it’s useful.

Aviate is not only gorgeous to interact with, but smart too. Aviate will let you know traffic conditions during your morning commute; intelligent calendar features at work; music apps and widgets when you plug in your headphones - plus your most-used apps are on your centre screen so you never have to hunt for them again.

the career opportunity
One artist as selected by Yahoo and their judges will receive:
  • USD $2,500
  • A mentoring session with Yahoo's Vice President, International Marketing, Robert Bridge*
  • The opportunity to have their work appear in Yahoo marketing communications
*If the selected artist is not based in London, the meeting will be via video conference

Six highly commended finalists as selected by Yahoo will receive:
  • USD $500
The voting period is the time to engage your friends, family and supporters to vote for your work! One artist with the highest number of votes will receive:
  • USD $1,000
template instructions
Artists must submit their work using one of the provided templates, which can be downloaded here. The dimensions have to be set at 1200px by 627px.

Please follow these guidelines when using the template:
  • Artists may design anywhere on the template as long as their artwork does not overlap the phone, the Yahoo Aviate logo, or the Google Play badge.
  • Elements can be moved but not hidden, cropped nor overlapping with each other.
  • The elements can be resized + or -10% keeping the existing proportions.
  • The phone can be rotated max + or -30 degrees. The other elements cannot be rotated.
  • Submissions cannot contain more than 20% text.
  • If text is added to the composition a sans serif font should be used, preferably Arial or Helvetica (it will be converted to Gotham before publication).
Any submission that does not use one of the templates provided or does not adhere to the following guidelines will be subject to removal.
Meet the judges
Mark Daiss
Mark came to Yahoo through Yahoo’s acquisition of Aviate in January 2014, where he was the co-founder and CEO. He now leads Yahoo’s product development and vision around Yahoo Aviate. Prior to Aviate, Mark was a co-founder of ThumbsUp Labs, founder at Pupil, a Technology Consultant at Accenture and Researcher of Image and Object Recognition at UCLA.

Mark holds a Bachelor of Science in Cognitive Science, Minor in Computer Science at UCLA.

Robert Bridge
Robert Bridge has worked for Yahoo since 2010. He’s responsible for the company’s marketing strategy and operations, which includes consumer and B2B marketing, across EMEA, LATAM, India, South East Asia and Canada.

Prior to joining Yahoo, Robert was Global Marketing Director at Phorm, a personalisation technology company, where he was responsible for their worldwide trade and consumer marketing. His first job after graduating was on the John Lewis management program. Robert received a BSC with Honors in Environmental Biology from the University of Newcastle-upon-Tyne in the UK.
Richard Stanley
Richard Stanley has worked for Yahoo since 2005. He is now Director, Head of Marketing Services and Creative Services. Richard leads a team who bring Yahoo’s B2C and B2B propositions to market across media and social and the creative that brings them to life.

Prior to joining Yahoo, Richard was a Communications Director at Starcom in Melbourne, planning on some of Australia’s biggest brands. Richard has over 18 years’ experience in advertising having started as a media buyer in his hometown of Melbourne.
creative invite guidelines
  • This opportunity is open globally to those who are at least 18 years of age at the time of entry.
  • Artists must set the dimensions of their work to 1200px by 627px and use the provided template.
  • Once chosen, the winners will be required to create the following additional formats:
    • 120x600
    • 728x90
    • 300x250
    • 300x600
    Yahoo will work with them where possible on this to offer guidance to ensure that the chosen designs accommodate production requirements.
  • Submissions cannot contain more than 20% text.
  • The copyright in and to the winning submissions shall be owned by Yahoo.
  • Artists should retain their original artwork files (in 300dpi) but designs must be submitted in JPEG or PNG, max size 5MB.
  • All entries must be original artwork (meaning not using third party pre-existing copyright materials).
  • Artists must join Talenthouse using an active email address in order to ensure they can be contacted should they be selected.
  • All submissions will feature as part of a global gallery with public voting on Facebook and Twitter.
  • Talenthouse reserves the right to disqualify artists who we believe are cheating the voting system as this is against the spirit of the Creative Invite.
  • Inappropriate, offensive and harmful submissions, as well as submissions that do not fit the brief, will be removed.
  • No purchase necessary to enter.

how yahoo will choose
Yahoo will select from all qualified submissions. A qualified submission is one which meets all the Terms & Conditions, Guidelines and Official Rules. Their selection will be independent of social votes.

The Talenthouse community and supporters of entrants, whether on Talenthouse or not, can vote for their favourite submissions during voting week via Facebook and Twitter. The artist with the largest public support will be chosen as the Highest Voted.
