Create the limited edition pack and label for Ballantine’s 21 Year Old Whisky

Ballantine’s invites graphic artists from around the world to create the label and outer box packaging artwork for a limited edition release of their 21 year old Scotch whisky. The theme of the artwork should focus on ‘Complex Spices’ - a key flavour note in the limited edition.

Ballantine’s is looking for creative, colorful, 2D graphic art that brings to life the complex spices and flavour notes that include cinnamon, warming ginger and liquorice. The artwork should not be too literal and more abstract. Creative representations of the flavour notes is highly encouraged. If you do want to include a literal visual of one or more of the spices, it should be incorporated in a clever and different way.

All submissions should be submitted using the template provided but you may also create other visual mockups.

One Selected Artist will have their work used on the limited edition bottle of Ballantine’s 21 Years Old and receive £5,000. Three Finalists will receive £1,000 each.

Before you start on your submission, please consider the following:
  • All submissions should use the label template provided here and respect the dimensions and die cut of the limited edition Ballantine’s 21 Years Old bottle front label, integrating the artwork on the indicated area and leaving white space for legal texts.
  • Visually interpret and bring to life the Complex Spices flavour note. Its packed with unparalleled depth of flavour, whilst mellow and robust. Intense spices; fresh ginger, cinnamon and liquorice. A lively mouthfeel, with a lingering nutty oakiness and sweet spice finish.   • Please follow the guidelines for the label and box design set out in the Design Guide.

  • The Ballantine's 21 Years Old Signature Flavour Series celebrates the evolution of flavour that occurs over twenty one years in the cask, by intensifying selected signature flavour notes within our renowned blend.
  • The Selected Artist and Finalists will have to supply their artwork as a vector file in CMYK supplied as an AI file or similar (high-res, layered PSD files, CMYK and 300dpi minimum, may also be accepted).

One Selected Artist, as chosen by Ballantine’s, will:
  • Have the opportunity to produce the official Ballantine’s limited edition bottle label and package, sold across the Asian market in 2018/2019
  • Have the opportunity for their work to be shared across Ballantine’s key digital marketing channels (e.g. across social media, digital, in-store)
  • Receive £5,000
Three highly commended Finalists, as chosen by Ballantine’s, will:
  • Potentially have their work shared across Ballantine’s social channels
  • Receive £1,000 each

  • This opportunity is open globally to those who are at least 25 years of age at the time of entry. Void where prohibited by law.
  • Limit ten (10) submissions per artist or artist team.
  • Each submission should contain at least two designs: a bottle label design and a box design.
  • Please note, that during the Submission Period, submissions may be featured on Ballentine's social media channels with credit given to the artist.
  • Artists should retain their original artwork files but designs must be submitted in JPEG or PNG, max size 10MB.
  • The Selected Artist and Finalists will have to supply their artwork as a vector file in CMYK supplied as an AI file or similar (high-res, layered PSD files, CMYK and 300dpi minimum, may also be accepted).
  • All submissions must be original artwork (meaning not using third party pre-existing copyright materials, or stock imagery except for those provided by Ballantine’s in the template) but can be pre-existing or created especially for this opportunity.
  • All submissions should use the label template provided and respect the dimensions and die cut of the limited edition Ballantine’s 21 Years Old bottle front label, integrating the artwork on the indicated area and leaving white space for legal texts. All rights in and to the material provided is reserved by Ballantine's (Pernod Ricard).
  • Please read the "YOUR SUBMISSION" section carefully.
  • Submissions should follow the guidelines for the label design set out in the Design Guide.
  • CSR: Artists should steer clear of showing drunkenness, pregnancy, drunk driving, or anyone under the age of 25 in their design.
  • The Selected Artist and Finalists may be asked to modify their design to fit production requirements.
  • If any persons appear or are referred to in the submission, the artist is solely responsible for obtaining, prior to submitting, all necessary usage rights and permissions for the contents of their submission. Proof will be required if selected.
  • All artists, who are not selected, shall grant Ballantine’s (Pernod Ricard) a limited, worldwide, non-exclusive, royalty-free license to promote their work on their channels for a period of three (3) months from Selected Artist announcement. All artists will be credited accordingly.
  • The Selected Artist will be required to assign Ballantine's (Pernod Ricard) all rights, title and interest in and to their work. The Selected Artist will have to sign a Copyright Agreement. In return, the Selected Artist will receive the specified incentives.
  • The Finalists will be required to grant Ballantine’s (Pernod Ricard) an exclusive license (global, unlimited, two (2) years, royalty-free). The Finalists will have to sign a License Agreement for the incentives set forth above.
  • Artists must join Talenthouse using an active email address in order to ensure they can be contacted should they be selected.
  • The Selected Artist and Finalists must respond to Talenthouse within two (2) days of receiving the notification email or else will forfeit all incentives.
  • Talenthouse reserves the right to remove inappropriate, offensive and harmful submissions as well as submissions that do not fit the brief, these guidelines, Official Rules or Ballantine’s global guidelines.

How Ballantine's will choose
Ballantine's will select from all qualified submissions. A qualified submission is one which meets all the Terms & Conditions, Guidelines and Official Rules.
