Daniel Day-Lewis returns to the big screen in Paul Thomas Anderson's Phantom Thread, an illuminating portrait both of an artist on a creative journey, and the women who keep his world running.

The film explores the world of London fashion in the 1950s, following renowned dressmaker Reynolds Woodcock. Along with his sister, they dress the rich, royal, and famous throughout high society. His creative life alone is disrupted by a strong-willed young woman who soon becomes a fixture in his life. Once controlled and planned, he finds his carefully tailored life disrupted by love.

To celebrate the release of the film, artists, designers and illustrators from around the world are invited to create one-of-a-kind artwork for Phantom Thread.

Artists should watch the trailer below, check out the film’s Facebook page, Instagram, and use these photos for additional inspiration. Feel free to take inspiration from the characters, time period, location, fashion and anything else you feel represents this film!

Five pieces of art will be selected by Focus Features. The Selected Artists will receive $2,000 for each piece chosen and potentially have their work used in the Phantom Thread marketing campaign.

  • Artists are able to reference the approved imagery, and the trailer, but artwork should all be original.

about phantom thread
Set in the glamour of 1950’s post-war London, renowned dressmaker Reynolds Woodcock (Daniel Day-Lewis) and his sister Cyril (Lesley Manville) are at the center of British fashion, dressing royalty, movie stars, heiresses, socialites, debutants and dames with the distinct style of The House of Woodcock. Women come and go through Woodcock’s life, providing the confirmed bachelor with inspiration and companionship, until he comes across a young, strong-willed woman, Alma (Vicky Krieps), who soon becomes a fixture in his life as his muse and lover. Once controlled and planned, he finds his carefully tailored life disrupted by love. With his latest film, Paul Thomas Anderson paints an illuminating portrait both of an artist on a creative journey, and the women who keep his world running. Phantom Thread is Paul Thomas Anderson’s eighth movie, and his second collaboration with Daniel Day-Lewis.
