A THANK YOU NOTE FROM GREG NICOTERO

“Even after ten years I’m still blown away by the response we get from the fans of The Walking Dead and it’s been incredible seeing them respond to the show in such creative, passionate and emotional ways. The imagination and artistic expression that went into the may entries was beyond impressive and it’s a real tribute to the legacy of the show, which is really down to the fans.

It was incredibly difficult choosing the top pieces of art from so many strong entries but I’m glad FOX have been able to showcase so much of it and create this exciting immersive exhibition in London. "The Walking Dead: Art Apocalypse" will bring something for everyone who loves the show, as well as those embracing it for the first time and I can’t wait to see everyone’s reaction when it opens.”

- Greg Nicotero, Executive Producer, Director and Special FX Make-Up Designer, The Walking Dead.

IMPORTANT ANNOUNCEMENT
Hi everyone, The Overall Selected Artist is Adam Cockerton-Rai. His artwork can be seen on the cover of Time Out London which launched today (February 5, 2019).
One of the biggest television shows in the world, The Walking Dead, returns to FOX for a thrilling ninth season on October 8, 2018 – and it’s about to enter a really exciting new chapter! Last season brought the culmination of “All Out War”, which pitted Rick Grimes and his group of survivors against the Saviors and their cunning leader, Negan. Now, we see our survivors a year and a half later, rebuilding civilisation under Rick’s steadfast leadership - but the world they knew is rapidly changing.

To celebrate The Walking Dead’s epic return, FOX is excited to invite visual artists, creators and fans from the UK to create a piece of artwork inspired by your favourite moment from the show so far. Whether that's your most memorable moment from a previous season, your favourite character, or a new storyline from the ninth season – it’s up to you!

The judging panel are looking for incredible pieces of artwork that captures your favourite The Walking Dead moments in creative and colourful ways, showing your love and passion for the show. You can submit any kind of static artwork! Watch the trailer below, check out The Walking Dead series 9 imagery for inspiration, and you can watch the new series now on FOX!

There's amazing opportunities up for grabs! Up to 20 pieces of artwork will be selected and potentially be featured across FOX’s social channels and in a pop-up exhibition in London. The Overall Selected Artist may also have their artwork featured on the ShortList Magazine cover wrap! See Career Opportunity for more information.
Things to Consider
When creating your submission, please consider the following:
  • Artwork may be in any format for the exhibition i.e. an alternative poster, illustration, 3D sculpture, collage or mixed media artwork. Please consider that the Overall Selected Artist's work will also be printed for the cover wrap of ShortList Magazine so a digital copy or photo of the work is required. Please consider, but don't be constrained by the ShortList cover wrap specs. Download specs here.
  • Capture your favourite The Walking Dead moment! This could include your favourite character, storyline or scene. You can find inspirational imagery here. Please note, you may download official imagery for additional inspiration and reference when creating your artwork. These images are not to be used directly in your submission.
  • Your artwork should focus on The Walking Dead TV series rather than the comic. Find out more about the series here.
  • You are encouraged to share your submission on social media using #TheWalkingDeadUK.
  • You can include past or present characters and scenes from The Walking Dead.
  • Submissions should not include or reference obscenity, offensive imagery, language or symbols, active violence, sexual activity or nudity, drug or alcohol use or minors (except minors of the series itself). Please do not use any commercial products (e.g. clothing, toys, food) and/or their trademarks, brands, logos or endorsements in your artwork.
  • No photography artwork or moving artwork please.
ABOUT THE WALKING DEAD
Last season brought the culmination of “All Out War,” which pitted Rick Grimes and his group of survivors against the Saviors and their cunning leader, Negan. With Negan’s life in his hands, Rick had a character-defining choice in front of him. By making the unilateral decision to spare Negan, Rick upheld the values his late son, Carl, championed in order to build for the future, but created conflict within his group.

Now, we see our survivors a year and a half after the end of the war, rebuilding civilisation under Rick’s steadfast leadership. It is a time of relative peace among the communities as they work together, looking to the past to forge the future, but the world they knew is rapidly changing as man-made structures continue to degrade, and nature takes over, changing the landscape and creating new challenges for our survivors.

As time passes, the communities confront unexpected obstacles, danger, and of course, walkers, but nothing quite prepares them for the formidable force they are about to encounter, which threatens the very idea of civilisation that our survivors have worked so hard to build.

MEET THE JUDGES
Greg Nicotero
Executive Producer, Director, Special FX Make-Up Designer

Nicotero began his career as a special effects make-up artist collaborating with George Romero. Within two years he found himself working with Sam Raimi, James Cameron, and Wes Craven on landmark films such as Evil Dead 2, Aliens, and A Nightmare On Elm Street.

Partnering with directors such as Frank Darabont, Steven Spielberg and Quentin Tarantino, Nicotero fine-tuned his craft as an effects artist and gradually moved into providing second unit direction on several feature films. After a stint on a number of movies across the globe (Inglourious Basterds, The Book Of Eli, Predators, and Transformers), Nicotero found himself designing zombies for The Walking Dead. Within months he’d become the producing director on the show and to this date has directed more than 25 episodes of the series.

His work on The Pacific, The Walking Dead, and Breaking Bad have garnered him nearly a dozen Emmy nominations and four wins.
Craig Ellis
Creative Director, Fox Networks Group

After a few years of cutting his teeth producing corporate videos and a couple of stabs at being a photojournalist, Craig first hit the broadcast world with a stint at National Geographic Channel, directing, editing and generally taking every opportunity to have fun in the world of creative marketing. 13 years and 12 channel brands later (not to mention a little stop-over at the BBC) Craig is now the Creative Director for the multi-award winning European Creative Services hub at Fox Networks Group based in London, working on the big hitter series’ and forging a creative team who will try their hands at anything at anyplace…almost. Aside from picking up a few awards himself, Craig has also been a judge for numerous industry competitions over the years.
James Inglis
Art Editor, ShortList

ShortList’s Art Editor, James has years of experience in the print industry making sure things look nice. He’s worked with artists and illustrators over a vast spectrum of styles and designed countless front covers, making him the perfect candidate to help decide what will and will not make a compelling image for ShortList readers. His advice to applicants is to keep it simple: creating an image that is compelling at a glance is the key to drawing in readers and making sure they pick up a copy of Shortlist. Also, don’t go mad with the gore; the show is as much about the characters as it is the flesh-eating walkers and nobody wants to look at zombies slurping down brains while they’re eating their breakfast. Except maybe Negan.
