Create & install artwork on Atlanta's 'Art Walk' with Moxy Atlanta Midtown

Creators Selected On
August 15, 2019

Following the success of previous #MoxyBlankCanvas campaigns, Moxy Hotels (part of Marriott International) is now looking for another official Artist-in-Residence for one of its newest hotels, Moxy Atlanta Midtown.

This hotel is located in one of the most dynamic and creative parts of this bustling southern city, and they’re right on Atlanta's Art Walk! As part of the Moxy Blank Canvas program, the hotel is offering 1 artist the opportunity to create artwork that will become ingrained in Midtown Atlanta’s vibrant culture. Home to the largest concentration of cultural venues in the southeast and attracting more than 6 million visitors each year, Midtown Atlanta’s art scene isn’t confined to gallery walls – it spills out into the streets and sidewalks.

Design and paint mural artwork for an outdoor space at the Moxy Atlanta Midtown hotel. Use the spaces available on the 'Art Walk' to create a truly inspiring and insta-worthy experience for art lovers walking through the city.

You may work with graffiti, illustration or paint (or maybe even mosaic art) - it’s up to you how you create your design. Your work should be imaginative and completely new outside the Moxy. It will be the first installation along the Art Walk and will set the tone for future installations along the art corridor! Envisioned as a unique pedestrian experience, the Art Walk links culture and community to transit within a creative space that fosters human connection and interaction at the street level. Be inspired by Midtown’s high-energy arts hub and Moxy's cheeky ‘Play On’ attitude.

The Selected Artist will receive $4,000 plus $4,000 production budget to bring their artwork to life over 5 days in September/October 2019. 2 Finalists will receive $500 each and potential exposure across Moxy’s social channels.

  • Design a mural artwork for the space on the Art Walk, just outside the Moxy Atlanta hotel that is truly unique and Instagramable.
  • The space on the Art Walk consists of the below areas. You may use some or all of these spaces:
    • Space at the top of a staircase
    • The staircase itself (i.e. you could use the vertical sections of a step)
    • Wall next to the staircase
    • Space at the bottom of the staircase around the Moxy hotel entrance
  • Check out these photos and watch this video to see how the spaces are linked, and how people will walk through the space. Moxy encourages you to use as much of the space as you can to create a really impactful experience. See dimensions for each section here.
  • Bring the Art Walk space to life with a modern, colourful and vibrant design - be inspired by the city of Atlanta, and Moxy’s cheeky, ‘Play On’ attitude.
  • Your artwork could be graffiti, painted or even mosaic - but consider the space is outside so the work will need to be durable and look amazing for years to come.

  • In your submission, please include:
    • A visual, sketch or mock-up of your proposed design, detailing which area of the Art Walk space it is for, and your inspiration for the artwork (JPEG/PNG);
    • A production plan detailing how you’ll use the $4,000 budget, what materials you’ll use, how it will be durable etc. (in English, PDF);
    • A portfolio sample showing examples of your previous work.
  • You may paint directly onto the walls and staircase surfaces.
  • When planning your work, keep in mind that you will need to install the work in up to 5 consecutive days in September/October 2019.
  • Consider the Ark Walk is a family-friendly space, so please ensure your work is suitable for an art lover of any age.
  • You’ll receive a production budget of $4,000 - this is to cover your materials to install the artwork. Consider everything from paint to overalls. Don’t worry about travel and accommodation for the installation period as this will be covered by Moxy.

Moxy Atlanta Midtown is in Atlanta’s “heart of the arts”. Guests feel the insane creative energy both inside and out. Bar Moxy features a graffiti mural by ATL’s own Greg Mike, the Beltline just outside the hotel is dotted with artwork and humming with events. Crave-worthy destinations like Ponce City Market, with its food hall, shopping and mini golf course, surround the hotel. Within walking distance, there are 150+ restaurants and bars - everything from cozy bakeries to late-night lounges.

Drawing on the art-infused surroundings, Atlanta vibes fuel the hotel's décor. It’s all local – the lighting, the furniture, the art. The result is a unique balance of the grit of the city with sweet southern hospitality. Read more about Midtown Atlanta here.

Born and raised in Connecticut, childhood trips to NYC in the mid-’80s exposed "Greg Mike" Mensching to the creative potential of reinventing public spaces through art and design. Always obsessed with the boundless energy and crisp line work of iconic American mid-century cartoons, by his early teens Greg began using the walls of his native state to fuse these two passions together. Mixing the take-no-prisoners bombast of classic NYC street art with the eagle-eyed precision of mass market illustration and animation has been his goal from the beginning. Further inspired by his deep involvement with skate culture and his intersections with the design world, he has become known for pieces that incorporate vivid explosions of incandescent color filtered through a Surrealist Pop Art perspective. Populated by gleefully twisted characters, his world is unsettling, mischievous and uniquely captivating.

Currently based in Atlanta, GA, Greg Mike is the founder and creative director of ABV AGENCY / GALLERY, a multi-platform studio specializing in branding, apparel design and visual production. A hub for Atlanta innovators, ABV also functions as a gallery exhibiting artists from around the world, highlighting emerging talents alongside globally recognized names. In 2015, Greg Mike founded OuterSpace Project, an event series that merges public art, live music, design, action sports and culture in Atlanta, GA.
