Capture beauty and the environment for Unilever

Unilever is looking for talented artists to bring to life a hair care brand's upcoming campaign showcasing it's eco-friendly nature. Beauty can be found in the environment all around us, and Unilever wants your help to capture the beauty of women doing 'small acts of love' for the planet. These women are urban women, they have decided to make a change, be a part of the change while still in their urban environment. We don’t see them as hippies who have walked away from the realities of city life. She still believes in looking glamorous and walking tall while she does good things for the planet.

Unilever is inviting artists around the world to create still photography or moving image pieces (GIFs, cinemagraphs or short form videos, max 10 seconds) that showcase women doing incredible things for the environment.

The Unilever team is looking for photographs and/or moving image pieces that capture women doing small acts of love for the planet. These small acts can be recycling litter from a beach, repurposing trash to create something new, reusing unfinished drinking water to water plants, or anything in between! The work should focus on telling stories of how women are minimizing waste by either recycling, re-purposing or re-using materials. Unilever wants to highlight how people are creating beauty in unexpected places! Artists are required to include 150-200 words detailing the subject’s story and her unique approach to making small acts of love in the world.

The judges are also very open to seeing different formats as long as they are based on photographic assets. Your submission can be anything from photography to cinemagraphs or short GIF’s as long as they are created using photography/film. Before submitting your work, please read the 'Things to Consider' section below and check out this mood board for inspiration.

An artist incentive pool of $10,000 will be made available for this brief. Moving Image pieces that are selected will receive $2,000 per piece, and photographs will receive $1,500 per photograph. At least a minimum of one moving image will be selected.
things to consider
  • Submissions must:
    • be high-resolution (please retain your original files. 300dpi minimum for photographs. Short form videos should be up to 10 seconds.)
    • include a short description of the story that is happening between 150 - 200 words.
    • be based on photography, or moving photographic assets (Moving Image). No other creative disciplines are allowed. Your photos may be pre-existing or can be created for this opportunity.
    • feature a female depicted, but both male and female artists may enter their submissions for this brief. You must be able to provide a model release form from the models shown in your submission if they are recognizable (face showing).
  • Submissions should:
    • showcase women minimizing waste by either recycling, re-purposing or re-using materials, and the model should have clean, well-groomed and healthy looking hair as well as glowing beautiful skin as this will be used for a personal care brand that sells beauty products.
    • include individuals between 18-30 years old.
    • feel like they are connected and belong to a brand/entity in terms of the color palette suggested and the tone of voice and spirit recommended. We encourage artistes to use visual connectors (example - a heart symbol that symbolizes the love for beauty and the earth, etc.), however, not at the cost of not looking natural and authentic - that is a priority. The work should be creative and artistic but must look authentic and engaging.

    • keep in mind the key brand values of: optimism, positivity, honesty, generosity and boldness.
    • leverage the following color palette. Artists are not restricted by this, but this color palette will ensure that the submission is on-brand.
    • depict authenticity, real-life situations (not staged studio scenarios). Submissions should appear earnest, thoughtful and warm and not serious or scary.
    • be aspirational and include people and models who have beautiful hair and skin. Beauty is integral to the campaign. Beauty can come in a lot of different shapes and sizes, which is welcome, so please keep this in mind when working on your submissions.
    • give you a sense of the honesty and earnestness of the brand. If it makes people cry or touches their heart, our job is done. This should definitely be the case for any short films. On static images and GIFs, it may be harder but touching hearts should be a big component of what we are doing here.
    • be visually enticing and conceptually engaging work. Unilever is creating a tribe through this work.
  • Submissions must not:
    • include or allude to alcohol drinking in a dangerous scenario (i.e. in connection with cars, swimming, etc.) depiction of violence, nudity or material that may be considered offensive. Neither should the work look obviously staged or depict anyone looking under 18.
    • not include copyrighted images, logos, or backgrounds.

The Selected Artists, as chosen by Unilever, will:
  • Receive the potential opportunity to work with Unilever on future campaigns with other brands/agencies
  • Receive potential exposure for their work across Unilever's social media channels
  • Unilever will make an artist incentive pool of $10,000 available for this brief. Moving Image pieces that are selected will receive $2,000 per piece, and photographs will receive $1,500 per photograph. At least a minimum of one moving image will be selected.
creative invite guidelines
  • This opportunity is open globally to those who are at least 18 years of age at the time of entry. Void where prohibited by law.
  • Multiple submissions (up to 10) and artist teams are allowed.
  • All submissions must be original artwork (meaning not using third party pre-existing copyright materials or photos purchased from image libraries).
  • Artists should retain their original high-res files but photographs should be submitted in JPEG or PNG, max. size 10MB.
  • Animated GIFs and videos should have a length of max. 10 seconds and should be uploaded as an mp4 via the “Participate” tab to the Talenthouse player. Artists should retain their original artwork files.
  • Please read the "THINGS TO CONSIDER" section carefully.
  • Submissions must include a female presence. The artist is solely responsible for obtaining, prior to submitting, all necessary usage rights and permissions for the contents of their submission. A Model Release Form will be required if selected.
  • The selected submissions may be modified in collaboration with the Selected Artists to accommodate production requirements.
  • The Selected Artists are required to sign an Artist Agreement assigning all rights, title and interest in and to the selected work to Unilever. In return, the Selected Artists will receive the specified incentives.
  • Artists that are not selected will retain ownership of their work, however Unilever have marketing rights to promote the work on their social media and online channels in connection with this Creative Invite for up to three months after announcement of the Selected Artists. All artists will be credited accordingly.
  • Artists must join Talenthouse using an active email address in order to ensure they can be contacted should they be selected.
  • The Selected Artists must respond to Talenthouse within two (2) days of receiving the notification email or else will forfeit all incentives.
  • Talenthouse reserves the right to remove inappropriate, offensive and harmful submissions as well as submissions that do not fit the brief, guidelines or Official Rules.
  • No purchase necessary to enter.

Unilever will select from all qualified submissions. A qualified submission is one which meets all the Terms & Conditions, Guidelines and Official Rules.
