Without further ado... a huge congratulations and a round of applause for the 1st place winner, Alex Flämig. We can't wait to see your artwork come to life over the coming months!

A message from MSC CRUISES:

MSC Cruises is calling out to all sea-loving artists to design an artwork for the hull of MSC Euribia, cruising the blue in a green way.

The blue leads us to endless discovery, far and wide, but it is the green leading us towards a better, sustainable future for all. At MSC Cruises, we’re committed to doing our part in preserving the future of our oceans. That is why we didn’t hold back when imagining a ship that marks yet another milestone in our commitment towards environmental sustainability: MSC Euribia. Named after the ancient Greek Goddess who had mastery over the seas, she is one of the world’s most environmentally advanced contemporary cruise ships, being powered by LNG.

For the first time ever, we are making an open call to inspired artists and designers across the globe. For what, you ask? We want one of YOU to design a work of art for the hull of MSC Euribia. In your design proposal, you’re asked to take inspiration from the marine ecosystem this ship helps to preserve.

The selected artist will receive a significant monetary prize but, more importantly, will have the chance to have his/her art be world-renowned as it cruises the seas on MSC Euribia in the following decades. The ship’s hull will become a unique, colossal canvas that will take the designer’s art across the globe, making it illustrious and memorable around the world.

For this brief MSC Cruises invites inspired and professional artists and designers to create masterpiece artworks, which could cruise around the globe, sailing towards a greener future.

The chosen artwork would be showcased on the hull of one of the world’s most environmentally advanced cruise ships.

In your design proposal we would like you to take inspiration from the marine ecosystem that MSC Euribia helps to preserve.

The Selected Creator will receive €15,500 in total and also get to cruise on board of the MSC Euribia!

5 additional pieces of work will be chosen as Finalists, and each creator will receive €1,500.

Things to Consider
  • Create a piece of artwork for the hull of the new MSC Euribia, cruising the blue in a green way.
  • Key themes: Love for the sea, respect for the marine environment and for sustainability.
  • Your submission needs to be aligned with MSC Cruises brand and values. Read more about these in this Brand Guide.
  • Avoid any graphic representation of the goddess Eurybia, but rather focus on MSC Euribia, in relation to sustainability and preservation of the marine ecosystem.
  • The PSD hull template contains masks that you will reuse for your final submission. It includes fixed and editable areas of the hull:
      • Please note that you cannot customise all of the green area - At least 20% of this area needs to remain clean for production. It is up to you which part of the area is left clear!
      • The same applies to the yellow area - at least 90% of this part needs to remain clean for production. In addition, only 3 colours can be used here. Alternatively, you can leave this area completely clear of any design!
  • Your submission should be digitally created as a vector illustration, then placed in the PSD hull template to create a realistic representation of your design on the ship, and finally submitted in PDF format, with multiple pages, max. size 10 MB:
      • The first page of the PDF should contain the Side View (this will be the preview displayed on Talenthouse website).
      • Further pages of the PDF should contain: bow frontal view, additional side view, stern view ( please keep one view only per page).
      • We strongly recommend submitting all the views provided in the PSD file, for a complete overview of your graphic proposal.
      • Additional artboards with flat designs are welcomed.
      • Please retain your original layered artwork files in the highest quality possible.

  • Code colours shall be RAL and NCS (no Pantone). The range of colours should not exceed 16 codes.
  • When developing your design keep in mind your submission should be suitable for the hull of the MSC Euribia, exhibitions and potentially developed into merchandise. It is also acceptable to submit a design that is different, yet complimentary, on both sides of the ship hull.
  • Consider the hull dimensions, avoid small details as it needs to be visible from afar. Please keep in mind that, as well as becoming an iconic symbol of the ship, the graphic might be displayed in an exhibition on board the ship!
  • You may use text in your work, either create your own or use stand free to use font. The text needs to be converted into curves to be reproduced.
  • The submission cannot include any religious, political, racist or discriminatory symbols or monuments; allude to alcohol drinking scenarios or dangerous situations, including any reference to children, or include images of real people (though you can draw people if you wish). There must be no nudity or pornography, curse words or vulgarities, no other trademarks or other logos of any kind – no copyrighted text or others’ owned artwork.
  • Finalists and the Selected Creator might be required to provide additional files and dimensions for production of the full-scaled hull artwork and exhibition piece (eg. A0 or A1). The Selected Creator will be required to provide EPS, SVG and AI files for the production of the artwork on the ship’s hull.
  • Tell us about your creative process and inspiration via the 'Description' field in your submission.
  • Please don’t share your submitted work online, on social media or in your portfolio until you have been given permission from Talenthouse.

technical requirements
  • SHIP LENGTH: 331 mt, HULL HEIGHT: 15 mt.

  • AREA OF APPLICATION: potentially any part of the ship that is constructed in white steel, excluding technical systems and devices. Painting to be above the water line and on hull (white painted parts) only.

  • AREA NOT PAINTABLE: Under water line, fender areas, porthole, glass element, technical devices such as cameras, sensors, light, antennas, domes, handrails, balcony cabins doors, life rafts, lifeboat, life tender, safety and hull markings. Avoid all technical spaces and windows (i.e. anchor, grates, etc) that shall have specific treatment/finishing due to operation and safety rules. Please also consider there might be safety restrictions on painting (lifeboat…).

  • Ship bow is a double curved surface so decoration shall be designed considering this scenario. A projection of the artwork into curved surfaces and adaptation to the graphic contents will be applied by engineers following technical requirements, rules and maritime restrictions.

  • Once artwork is defined, proper technical design adaptation will be processed.

  • Hull graphic can be painted along the entire side of the hull potentially fading from more intense and articulate decoration on bow fading back to the stern area.
.

  • MSC Logo and ship names on both sides, top bow and stern sides, shall be kept visible and maintain the same colour proportions.
  • Please respect the safe area around MSC Cruises Logo and Ship name as shown in the Brand Guide.
  • Painting to be solid colours; no blending or shading of colours, no overlapping of colours, no paintbrush, no metalized, pearl colour or any other peculiar finishing of the varnished itself.
  • Code colours shall be RAL and NCS (no Pantone). The range of colours should not exceed 16 codes.
  • Refrain from including small graphic elements that will be hard to replicate and will not be visible from far away.
  • Artwork on port side and starboard sides can be the same or different.
  • PSD file provided include a green area (at least 20% of this area needs to remain clean for production. It is up to you which part of the area is left clear!) and a yellow area (at least 90% of this part needs to remain clean for production). Yellow area is optional to customize and only 3 colours can be used here.
