How much would you guess a yacht featuring two helipads, a hot tub, and a DJ booth is worth? What if it only existed in a virtual world and you could never physically set foot on it? Last month an anonymous buyer paid $650,000 for the Metaflower Super Mega Yacht in the virtual game world Sandbox. Now you don’t have to just feel poor in the real world, you can also feel poor in a virtual world. Thanks metaverse.
Metaverse developer Republic Realm announced the sale, describing it as “an exciting time for every member of the Fantasy Community.” The Metaflower Super Mega Yacht sold for 149 ETH (Ethereum), the equivalent of $650,000. There are a few real, physical yachts for under $500,000 here, if you're that way inclined.
Unsurprisingly, the sale is pretty big news in the world of blockchain.
Congrats to the new owner of The Metaflower NFT Super Mega Yacht on making metaverse NFT history. With the sale, the digital yacht became the most expensive NFT (non-fungible token) asset in The Sandbox - a metaverse built using the Ethereum blockchain. The Sandbox is an online game and one of the leading metaverse worlds, boasting collabs fwith the likes of Snoop Dogg and Deadmau5.
The gaming world allows users to own virtual plots of land that they can buy and sell with real-world value. Think Minecraft but blockchain. Between November 22 to 28 this year, $86.56 million NFT land sales were reportedly tied to The Sandbox blockchain.
The Metaflower, named in honour of The Mayflower (the ship that brought the pilgrims from England to America), exists in the “Fantasy Islands” with its own ‘Fantasy Marina”. The developer describes the digital island chain as a “luxury real estate development project of 100 NFT private islands.”
Oh, and there’s even a backstory. Hark the legend of the lady pirate poet, Agadora Humphries, who settled on the islands to “weave hammocks from reeds” or “catch crabs with her bare hands”.
“Today, 100 lucky island owners live in her magical dream paradise,” the developer said. “They are building a utopia in the metaverse on their private islands, a utopia governed for the people, by the people.”
Did you know the total market cap of the Fantasy Islands & Fantasy Collection NFTs is >$30 million? Reportedly selling out in under 24 hours and with an entry price of 63.9 ETH (around $280,000), digital real estate on the archipelago is a hot commodity. If buying your own home seemed possible only in a fantasy world, we have bad news for you.
