Facebook Meta CEO Mark Zuckerberg has revealed that Instagram is getting ready to add functionality to host NFTs on the platform, and that he hopes minting will also be available within the next few months.
South by Southwest (SXSW) conference is currently taking place in Austin, Texas, where ol' Zuckers is reported to have stated at a conference that “we’re working on bringing NFTs to Instagram in the near term,” and that "hopefully" you'd be able to also mint NFTs with Instagram very soon.
“I’m not ready to announce exactly what that’s going to be today, but, over the next several months, the ability to bring some of your NFTs in, and hopefully over time be able to mint things within that environment.”
Adam Mosseri, Head of Instagram, also spoke about incorporating NFTs into the platform during a live Instagram Q&A last year, saying that he likes the idea of "making them more accessible to a broader audience" and that "it's an interesting place that we can play, and also a way to hopefully help creators."

This light announcement isn't a surprise after Facebook changed its company name to Meta to make a statement about the business's intentions to explore an integrated digital world in the metaverse, bringing Web 3.0 to its products and services.
However, it's not entirely clear what "NFTs coming to Instagram" really means. Displaying a version of the NFT you have for sale in your Instagram imagery is already an option, so the more likely route could be that Instagram will open an NFT marketplace where creators can sell their NFTs, and perhaps Meta might even move into cryptocurrency and release Metacoin someday.
It's Web 3.0's world and we're just living in it.
