Hey Talenthouse Creatives! Our friends at Sony Pictures Entertainment have come out with an exciting new Creative Brief for the upcoming film Resident Evil: Welcome To Raccoon City, and we need your design talents! They are looking for global creatives to design a propaganda poster for the film's pharmaceutical giant, Umbrella Corp, in the style of a 1980s aesthetic. The selected artworks may be featured on a billboard within a scene of the movie itself!
So how does one go about creating a captivating propaganda poster in the first place? And what are the 1980’s design aesthetics that artists should consider when creating their artworks?
Let us give you a few pointers.

1) What is propaganda?
It is information, especially of a biased or misleading nature, used to promote or publicize a particular political cause or point of view.
Propaganda is essentially like an advertisement for any other brand, but the intentions behind the messaging, much like Umbrella Corp, are nefarious at heart. However, the way an organization portrays itself in propaganda is usually “friendly”, “professional”, and “safe” despite its true intentions.

2) What type of imagery should be included in a propaganda poster?
The goal of propaganda is to mislead, and make the people believe that the organization is always on the people’s side. Consider including imagery of smiling faces, clean aesthetics, seemingly-perfect environments and positive gestures. But remember, the propaganda imagery shouldn’t feel too genuine or lifelike--it should be more like the artwork is imposing values of positivity rather than embodying them.
If you do choose to include imagery of people in your poster artwork for Umbrella Corp, please do not  include the likenesses of any cast, characters or real individuals in your work. Instead, do use nondescript faces and figures in your work.

3) What type of messaging should be included in a propaganda poster?
Focus on messaging that is deceptively positive. Consider some of the following pre-approved slogans, or get creative and make your own!

  • Enjoy your stay!
  • Our business is life itself.
  • Obedience Breeds Discipline, Discipline Breeds Unity, Unity Breeds Power, Power Is Life

4) The brief says that Umbrella Corp is a pharmaceutical company. How should I represent that in my artwork?
Consider the following as imagery: pill bottles, syringes, doctors, lab coats, lab equipment, medicine bottles, etc.

5) How do I represent a 1980s design aesthetic?
Consider some of the following examples of 1980s design aesthetic in your work: Example 1, Example 2.
Please be sure to include only the following approved fonts in your works: Times New Roman and/or Source Serif Variable Semibold.

6) How can I make sure my artwork is “billboard ready”?
Make sure to create your artwork in the correct aspect ratio! Horizontal 3:2 aspect ratio is the requested aspect ratio. Make sure that your main imagery and text covers at least 60-70% of the space.
