Don't you love it when December rolls around and we get a rundown of everything that happened to us during the year so far? Case in point, Giphy have released lists of their most-viewed gifs of 2021, with the usual round-up of TV highlights, pop culture references, and emotional reactions.

To switch things up a bit, Giphy has also included its new format Giphy Clips in the round-up, incorporating sound into short-form content while remaining true to itself with “short, snappy, and super sendable” clips.

Their goal was also “to highlight the cultural trends on GIPHY unique to 2021”. To achieve this they put extra emphasis on showcasing outliers and basically skipping to the good stuff rather than flooding the list with commonplace “Happy Birthday” and “Good Morning” gifs. Thanks Giphy, we appreciate you.

So here’s the rundown.

The Office, unsurprisingly, is still clinging onto its title as the most gif-able show to grace our screens. 17 years after its premiere it has not only clinched the top spot with frustrated Stantley as top gif of the year, but The Office’s giphy channel was also the most popular channel of the year. Newer favourites include the likes of Netflix’s Bridgerton and Disney +’s WandaVision, both boasting highly gif-able content.

Kim Kardashian received a special mention as the “Personality of the Year”, with the only individual channel to seize a top spot on the list of Top Partner Channels. You go Kim. Ai and Aiko by Peter Draw was also congratulated as the most-viewed artist channel of the year.

Now, without further ado, let’s introduce the top gifs and clips of 2021.

1. “Bored Stanley” by The Office

This year we have all been bored Stanley. Cross-armed and unamused, this moment from Season 5 of The Office has succeeded in capturing the national mood in a year where feelings of boredom and monotony were the norm.

2. “Tired Tom” by HBO Max

Vintage yet relatable, this one doesn’t really require explanation. As we crawl our way to the finish line of 2021 we are all tired, oh-so tired.

2. “It Is Your Birthday” by The Office

Another The Office favourite, Dwight Schrute’s attempt at throwing an office birthday party strips things back to basics. And we love him for it.

GLAAD created this clip to celebrate Pride Month in June and we couldn’t be happier it made it to the top 3 spot.
