[blockquote]Creativity is a choice. If you want to be more creative it starts with making a deliberate choice
to be creative. [/blockquote]

- Gregg Fraley

Not too long ago, this tweet appeared in my stream on Twitter. It reminded me of my own path to creativity over 10 years ago. Like most people, I always thought I wasn’t the creative type, even though I loved to decorate my bedroom, create abstract art pieces, and studied Art History in college.

My a-ha moment happened while I was still in my 20s. After that moment, I started to read and devour as much as I could about creativity and the creative process. That path has taken me on a long journey, that until recently, I had not realized was about making a conscious choice to be creative.

All too often, we assume that creativity will just flow out of our being, like water out of a tap, but it doesn’t work that way. Creativity is a choice, much like the choice of what we are going to eat today.

This is what I’ve learned so far:

  • Creativity is an option you decide to pursue every day.
  • Creativity is an intention that you set for yourself.
  • Creativity is a way of life that you adopt.

Choosing to be creative is the first step to being creative. Until you make that conscious choice and begin to make the effort, to be creative, you never will be and you will certainly never believe you are a creative being.

This is where the real magic happens. This is the space where your unconscious takes over and where you should allow yourself to be free and experiment with what ideas come your way.

So will you continue to believe you are not creative or like Gregg Fraley said above, will you choose creativity?
