Biografie
Winterpills may be one of the most exciting acts to emerge from Northampton, Massachusetts in recent years, adding another chapter to the ever-expanding world of ethereal indie-pop. Known for spectral and intimate boy/girl harmonies, they play haunting, delicate, dynamic, room-hushingly beautiful music with aching melodies and acid lyrics. Think Elliott Smith, Cat Stevens, Iron & Wine, and the Innocence Mission all have an elaborate picnic together and fall asleep in Joni Mitchell's backyard.
When Winterpills released their self-titled debut album in the fall of 2005, fans and critics alike scrambled to define what made it one of most significant musical discoveries of the year. Critics met the album with descriptions like “Heavy with moments of sheer beauty”, “exquisite vocals”, “deeply moving… heartrending”, and “as textured as the best indie rock around.” Fans put the album in the Top 100 on iTunes and Amazon.com and made Winterpills a most requested band on radio stations across the country. A feature on NPR’s Weekend Edition followed along with performances on nationally syndicated radio shows World Café, Mountain Stage and the band was off to the races.
Their second album, The Light Divides was released in 2007. Novelist and music writer Jonathan Lethem wrote, “The Light Divides ups the ante on the Winterpills’ shimmering, resonant, heartbroken pop glory.... The hooks and harmonies have been burnished so that they glow from within — it’s as if Winterpills has brought to light the songs you were already humming to yourself, but didn’t know it."
On their third and most recent album, Central Chambers, Winterpills maintains its signature chamber-indie ambiance while exploring new grounds sonically and lyrically. The pleading lyrics, the dreamy pop, the harmonized vocal exchanges and evocative playing – comprise a distinctive sound, crafted over the course of three albums and very much owned by the band playing it. Critical praise for the band continues: “Gracefully obscure lyrics and artfully dreamy vocals curl over lush acoustic-electronic layers and catchy pop structures: Think Psychedelic Furs meet Magnetic Fields and Elliott Smith while mulling late-period Beatles in Radiohead’s studio. These are cool, literate dreamscapes where even some airy soulfulness wafts in” (The Boston Herald).
Central Chamber's "Take Away the Words", was recently featured on the hit ABC show, Grey's Anatomy.
Winterpills have shared the stage with such notable and diverse artists as Vampire Weekend, CAKE, Lisa Germano, Juana Molina, Crowded House, Fountains of Wayne, Martha Wainwright, The Mountain Goats, Josh Ritter, among others. They will tour with Grant-Lee Phillips this coming November, 2009.
