Bio
Eden Maxwell is a painter, writer, and kiteflier of some note.
His paintings are in private collections here and abroad. Eden’s art has been exhibited on both coasts, including the World Trade Center and the Madison Square Garden Museum of Sport. Eden’s work has been featured in the Adobe Illustrator WoW Book and by the Encyclopedia Britannica.
Eden was born to holocaust survivors in a displaced persons (DP) camp outside Munich, Germany after World War Two. His formative years were on the mean streets—a battle zone of violence that attempted to block his path toward right action and right livelihood. He quickly learned to be decisive, to walk the talk knowing that excuses for survival, or anything else, were not an option. Those early life-threatening confrontations in the hood forged his innate sense of self, a trait he needed then and now—to persevere as an artist.
Over the years, Eden, who is no stranger to daunting challenges, has disappointed the grim reaper more than once, including a car crash that left him in a coma with a metaphysical side effect: a near death experience had opened a dimensional portal filled with visions from the other side. This mind-altering experience, among others, continued to fuel a hunger that could not be satisfied by a life of rote.
Eden always felt something essential was missing from his life in the corporate world. There had to be more than solely striving for material goods or having ‘he paid his bills on time’ etched onto his tombstone. But more of what?
So, three decades ago, with no net, guarantees, or a rich uncle, Eden gave up the ‘security’ of a promising Fortune 500 fast track position, health insurance, stock option plans, weekend brunches, and a doorman for what would become an unpredictable and daunting odyssey. Those close to him thought he was making a huge career mistake. To quote the Buddhist-leaning Yoda: “Do or do not … there is no try.” Eden made the leap, uprooting body and soul from New Jersey to that distant realm far far away: California.
With a fire in the belly, Eden had embarked on a nearly thirty-year-long odyssey to discover that his dharma (purpose in life) dwelt in the wellspring of art. On his journey, he met and spent many years with a great Zen master artist. He writes about his adventure into art and self-discovery in his most recent book, An Artist Empowered.
Eden is also the bestselling author of The Magnificent Book of Kites, Sterling Publishing, NYC; and he has contributed to numerous publications, including: Popular Science, Popular Mechanics, Omni, MacUser, Art Calendar Magazine, and the Drachen Foundation Journal.
Influences All those brave artists who persevered in the face of mainstream ignorance, opposition, and mindless social conditioning.
