Biography
Alexander Percy was born in Santurce, Puerto Rico in 1977. He is the oldest son of Santos Percy and Evelyn Berríos and the eldest of three children. He was raised between Barrio Obrero (Santurce) and Río Grande while attending public Rio Grande’s public school, always demonstrating an interest in and aptitude for drawing and graffiti. Alexander began to study painting in 1995 at University of Puerto Rico, Rio Piedras. Master artists Rafael Rivera Rosa, Martín García, Susana Herrero, Pablo Rubio and professors Jaime Romano, Néstor Millán, Angel Nevárez, Erick French among others were his guides during this time. Historians María Gigliotti, Arturo Dávila, Nilsevady Fusá, Ingrid Jiménez and Felicita Paz among others took charge of his art history education. In 1998, he participated in his first exhibit with a group of students selected by Martín García from his human figure workshops. After that showcase, he was bewitched by a passion for art. The following year he contributed to “Clonation”, a collective show of art students, after which he was invited to several art shows in the Francisco Oller gallery located in the faculty of Humanities studies, ever after graduating. Alexander completed his studies at UPR in 2000 with a degree in painting, but remained a participant in the political and cultural activities within -or sometimes against- the institution. In 2001, he started to study jewelry design with professor Jorge Rivera, at the School of Art and Science of San Juan and finished his own jewelry collection, called “Creatures from the Ocean”. In 2002, Alexander was invited to become part of the exhibition “Art for Vieques” where his painting won the first prize. Until 2004, this exhibit continued to travel to different locations in Puerto Rico and the Dominican Republic. The same year Alexander was invited by the Dominican art collector Juan Rodriguez to participate in the group show “Latin-American Encounter” in Museo de las Casas Reales in the Dominican Republic. Following this show he continued to display his work in all of Rodriguez’s subsequent exhibitions. In 2005, he had his first solo show called “Soul’s Landscapes” held in Casa Escuté, Carolina, PR, which lasted over three months. After this show, Alexander decided to leave Puerto Rico and move to New York, where he has been living and working since. In 2006 he had his second solo show called “Between Lunacy and Sanity”, which was held in Boricua College in Brooklyn, NY where he was part of the art faculty at the time. That same year Alexander was invited to bring the show to Casa Escuté in Puerto Rico. In 2007 he meet cultural activist, curator, filmmaker and actress Taína Traverso and she invited Alexander to show his paintings in the exhibition “Expressed Mediums”, a group show of New York artists, celebrated in el Taller Boricua in El Barrio, NYC. Since 2007, Alexander has been invited to several art fairs and art shows in and outside of New York, including the ICA Fair (International Caribbean Art Fair) in 2007 and 2008, Art Shanghai ’08 in Shanghai, China and ArtBasel ‘08 in Miami. In 2008, Alexander got fascinated by music production, and since then, has been working with different local artists composing their music, making their beats and recording their projects. Alexander is currently working on a series of art/sound installations that will show in the future. Alexander Percy’s pieces are held in private and public collections around the world.
