Bio N e l i a n a F u e n m a y o r is a fashion designer who was strongly influenced at a young age by her mother’s work as a dressmaker and this led her to follow her desire to study fashion. She has completed a BA (Hons) in Fashion Design Technology at London College of Fashion part of the University of the Arts London with first class honours.

Focusing on a new interpretation of sustainable design, Neliana creates traditional knitwear using fair trade wool sourced from the Venezuelan Andes where she is from. There, she learnt techniques from local artisan weavers which she has applied into her collections by creating deliberate over-sized weaves. ‘My intention is to avoid the use of fur by weaving and rescuing its traditional techniques, into modern design approaching similar aesthetics’. Currently Neliana is developing wooden glasses which are made by using different types of woods by giving life and a new function to wasted material.

‘I am constantly researching about alternative materials as oppose to conventional ones’ and ‘make it work with relevant shapes and structure, always exemplifying a very feminine and strong silhouette’

Whilst studying, Neliana has assisted in the design department of the Stella McCartney, Pringle of Scotland (collection sponser) and production department at Burberry. Working with such brands has given her a broader knowledge of the British fashion tradition and the evolution of today’s fashion industry.

Neliana’s collection was chosen by Vogue UK as part of ‘the best 21 graduate collections’ of the year. Also, she was invited to participate at the Japan Fashion Week event showcasing new talent at the Fashion Grand Prix 2009 where she was awarded with an Honorable Mention prize.

She aims to gain more experience working with designers of similar interests within the fashion industry and, is now working on her next womenswear and accessories collection. She also wishes to introduce fashion design as a career within the higher educational system of her home country of Venezuela.
