Bio I love writing plays. I think I might love writing plays more than doing anything else. And I’m good at it. I may not have had a ton of productions but I know I’m a solid writer that actors and directors have a good time working with. I’m also a total gushy nerd when I get the chance to be involved in a project. Maybe I get that way because writing plays up to a certain point is such a solitary venture. But I still get like a kid at Christmas when I get the chance to get into a room with actors and a director.
I also love a challenge, am cool under pressure and have a wicked sense of humor, which I think are all pretty good qualities in general but could be an asset when having to write a ten minute play in a small amount of time. Oh, and I write fashion copy for Elle Magazine’s website. This may not seem like it has a lot to do with the 24-Hour Plays but when I am given an assignment it’s usually about something I am not thoroughly schooled in (like please write a quiz about “What Fall Shoe Are You?”) and is due in twenty four hours. I have learned from years of doing this how to focus, write quickly and just get something out on the page without being too precious or taking myself too seriously because it’s much easier to go back and edit something before sending it in than sitting in front of a computer screen freaking out about how to begin the perfect sentence.
Lastly, three years ago I did the 24-Hour Plays up at the Orchard Project. I had a blast. I was totally foolish and picked the actors I wanted in my head and plotted out a play before we had even bargained for who we wanted. Of course I didn’t get any of my first choice actors and had to think of something totally different to write about. It was a great lesson to learn that you should never get married to an idea because things can always change. The actors I got were awesome and so much fun to write for. In fact the whole process (even the staying up late part) made for a really great experience.
