About Josephine Costain

Its me and my guitar, telling my stories. Rocking out from my soul, sharing, my passion for life, love and music...

Location New Zealand, Auckland

Bio So whats my story? I've been singing since I was a kid and writing songs. That would be over twenty years now. It's one of the things I love to do. It brings me a lot of joy. I know that I'll always do it. I think it brings other people happiness as well. There's nothing that I love to do more than sing, create music and share that with other people. I'm passionate about it :)

I grew up in a family of musicians. My mother sings and plays guitar and bass guitar. Her husband is a country music singer and multi-instrumentalist. My aunties sing as well. We would gather round when I was a kid as a family and sing songs. I started singing country music and performing at country music clubs when I was nine. When I was twelve years old, I won a local talent quest singing John Lennon's Imagine', that was pretty cool.
I've been studying songwriting with Pat Pattison. I have been working on the craft. I have been seeking to be as authentic to who I am, as much as I can, and learning or discovering who I am as a human being. What my values are, what's important to me. Being as unique an artist as I can. I've gone through phases where I've explored different genres, collaborating with many artists (electronica, funk, world, folk, soul, jazz) but essentially, it's been me and my guitar, telling my stories.

I am of mixed cultural heritage. My father who died when I was a child was Greek, that makes me half Greek, my mother is half Maori, the other half English and Irish. I grew up in a western culture in Australia and New Zealand. I think essentially that makes me a westerner, but I've always had a sense of pride for these different cultures that I come from.

I'm constantly in process with developing as a human being and as an artist. For the last ten years I feel like I've been refining as an artist. Exploring and developing. If my music effects people and brings them pleasure, then that makes me happy.
