The PowerUp with Ultrabook story

After 4 months of DJ submissions, voting and parties across the UK, the PowerUp with Ultrabook story has come to a close. Last night, the London final took place at Hoxton Galleries in Shoreditch. Not only did the DJs get the chance to play alongside bass music pioneer Benji B, but the venue was also decked out by onedotzero and Marshmallow Laser Feast, who created an interactive digital set, powered entirely by Intel Ultrabooks. Thanks to all who took part!

PowerUp with Ultrabook – The winning DJ’s Stories

After three months of sonic warfare, the UK’s hottest new DJs have been whittled down to a final six – who will join Benji B at the PowerUp London Final, this Thursday

PowerUp with Ultrabook began as a nationwide search to discover up and coming DJs hosted by Intel in association with DJMag and Benji B.

Budding DJs across the UK were asked to submit a 20 minute mix showcasing their sound. The standard was high, with nearly 200 submissions and plenty of styles to choose from. The competition closed on Sept 2nd and the public were invited to vote for their favourite mixes. Then based on public opinion our expert panel of judges - DJMag, Benji B and Intel – chose our final 18 DJs. Those that got through played out at the heats in Birmingham, Manchester and London, alongside top UK underground talents, like Zed Bias, dBridge, Illum Sphere and Synkro, where 6 final winners were chosen to play at the London final.

How long have you been DJing?
Just over 10 years now; UK garage was what first got me into DJing, trying to emulate the likes of EZ and Jason Kaye.
Describe your sound?
Deep, funky, soulful and not surprisingly, heavily influenced by UK garage style beats.
How did you go about the PowerUp mix?
I started off by mixing two classic house songs together, Fred Falke and Hardrive, this was to grab the listeners attention straight away. I then brought it bang up to date with a modern day classic from Dusky and took it from there.
How do you plan to impress at the regional heats?
The only way I know how; by playing songs that are going to make the crowd want to get up and dance and not want to stop.

Describe your sound?
Leftfield Electro House, pounding Techno, alternative oddities.
How did you go about the PowerUp mix?
This mix had to stand out and have an alternative edge – It just had to be different. Cue painstaking hours spent on the hunt for that perfect clutch of tunes that break all the rules, that make you want to dance, that make you feel alive, that make you question the limits of reality! Then 20 minutes of Ableton and I’m done.
How do you plan to impress at the regional heats?
Anyone who can successfully harness the eclectic PowerUp crowd is sure to impress and I’m up for the challenge.

London Winners

Name:
Avinash Daryanani (aka Avi Del Mono)
Age:

How long have you been DJing?
About 10 years, on and off.
Describe your sound?
I’ve been listening to all kinds of music my entire life, through growing up in different cultures and countries, except for anything overly commercial or cheesy. In terms of DJing, my style is a real mix of underground sounds – mainly hip-hop, soul, house, and stuff emerging out of the UK bass scene
How did you go about the PowerUp mix?
It was hard to impress with the 20-minute time limit especially with so much competition; I really wanted to showcase some creativity with all the styles I play. I settled on a 130bpm (ish) tempo and there were two tunes that had to make it in, which became the lynchpins for the whole mix (a Floating Points dub and Helix’s “Drum Track”). I made sure I included some vocals in there for some nice long mixes. I was pretty happy with the finished product.
How do you plan to impress at the regional heats?
Playing nothing but bangers – old and new!

How did you go about the PowerUp mix?
Selected some current tracks that I have real belief in and mixed them with a little imagination and originality
How do you plan to impress at the regional heats?
Take some risks and of course, keep things technical

How long have you been DJing?
I’ve been bedroom DJing for around five years, I’ve got to play in clubs on and off in that time too, but never really got the opportunity to play my sound to an audience.
Describe your sound?
In a nutshell its house & trance. I love big melodic, atmospheric breakdowns, but also short stabby bass-lines really creates the energy in a room.
How did you go about the PowerUp mix?
I had recently been listening to a few of the recent releases on Anjunadeep, and had been blown away by the quality. I did some homework on deep house and decided to make a mix, the next thing I know it won!
How do you plan to impress at the regional heats?
I’ve been hard at work the past week making an insane number of edits and mashups of my favourites and some classics. My selection of tracks will make that crowd go crazy!
