My current series on the Mayan mythological underworld is called Xibalba. The Mayan believed that when one dies they enter Xibalba (underworld) where they would go through a series of trials. If they survived the journey they would rise out of the underworld and be reborn into the heavenly realm.
The second series of work is based on Adinkra symbols. My focus in this series is capturing the meaning of the symbols (hand–printed and hand-embroidered). Adinkra clothes were made and used exclusively by the royalty and spiritual leaders for devotional ceremonies and rituals. Each of the motifs that make-up Adinkra symbolism has a name and meaning derived from a proverb, a historical event, human attitude, animal behavior, plant life, or shapes of objects. These are graphically rendered in stylized geometric shapes.
Location United States, Florida, West Palm Beach
Bio My artwork is about intensity of color, curved lines, and daring patterns unified into one language. Due to this, I feel my art work is a pictorial language that communicates the connections between various human experiences. However at the core of my work, I have always explored the depths of an African heart to a Latin rhythm. My work spans many techniques including drawing, painting, and fiber media.
Influences The art I create is highly influence by Afro-Latin roots. My parents are from Honduras where the Mayan civilization once dominated the landscape.
