The mining of the subconscious requires a methodology. Consciousness taints originality so one must inhibit this reflex and search for a state of mind where the conscious and subconscious collide. Using graphite paper, I smudge the blank paper with scratch marks and finger prints. I stare into the dirtied paper until images appear. It may take a second or a few days to search for the right characters. By using meditative drawing, I am able to project intuitive drawings onto a page like the light of a film projector to a screen. I trace the projected image as if it existed. The composition becomes an organic flow of creatures and people that form abstract hills and landscapes. I use color to move the viewer's gaze and manipulate depth within the work. The product of my method reveals the genuine nature of my subconscious.
My drawings are a reservoir filled with creatures and characters. I select certain subjects and highlight them in new works. By scanning my drawings and editing them into new compositions, I am able to trace them onto wood. I use a wood burning tool with various tips to scorch my images into the wood. I also use acrylic paint, wood stain, crayons, ink and colored pencils. Utilizing multiple mediums, I create different textures and depth. The contrast of graphite and ink play a pivotal role in the style of my drawings. I utilize this same technique in my wood burnings with the contrast of the burnt line to the color of acrylic, stain, or crayon. Experimentation is vital to the success of my work.
